Copy Cat Cupcakery – Part 1

Many years ago, I was walking down Denman Street in Vancouver with a client. We passed by Cupcakes which was a little bakery that specialized in small and large cupcakes with “real” butter icing.

My client said: “They will never survive”. In my head, I thought: “Wow, what a great idea to specialize in cupcakes!”

I have always loved cupcakes because they are so much fun to look at and eat. The retail store was so colourful with beautiful round platers on stands filled with cupcakes and enclosed in a see-through plastic lid.

Since that day on Denman Street, Cupcakes has been very successful and has multiple franchise locations throughout North America.

A few months ago, I noticed a new business that was in the process of opening on Commercial Drive in one of Vancouver’s hip bohemian neighbourhoods. The business was a Cupcakery. This did not surprise me at all. In fact, since I saw the first Cupcakes location on Denman Street, I knew the business concept was going to be big. Cassia Cupcakery is just one of the many copycats that will ride the wave of this exciting concept.

There is always room for competition in the market when a great concept meets with favourable demand. Developing a business concept takes a great deal of time, money and energy, but can be extremely rewarding. Taking a great idea and seeing your vision become a reality can be just asrewarding.

What is your path?
