Question #5 – What are the challenges or pitfalls of using digital marketing?

When it comes to pitfalls there are many. Instead of addressing a long list of challenges, I have decided to focus on the most important one. You need to know this in order to be successful with social media.

I have watched a number of social media gurus. I see how they build their followers. Find out what they are doing that makes all the difference.

Hi, this is Jen DeTracey, the Founder of LIFT Strategies, One of Canada’s Top Marketing Strategists and the author of the book, Lift Strategies – Quick Tips to Engage Customers and Elevate Profits.

This is question number 5 of Digital Marketing 101. That is, what are the challenges or pitfalls of using digital marketing?

There’s so many, but one of the key ones is to remember that digital marketing is a way to build relationships. For example, if you’re using a certain social media platform and you want to get results, you need to engage and respond.

Whether it be Twitter, or LinkedIn comments, or LinkedIn group comments, or blog post comments, or Facebook comments, you need to be connecting, and engaging, and responding to people that.

Re-Tweeting your Tweet, or sharing your posts, or liking. You want to start a conversation. You want to build that relationship. If you’re just sending out comments on social media and you’re not engaging with other people, you won’t see the impact.

Also, if you are feeling stretched for time you might want to really master one type of digital marketing first. It might be Instagram. It might be Pinterest. It might be LinkedIn depending on who your client or customer base is.

At the end of the day it’s really just creating a dialogue so you can connect more deeply with people. You’ll hear stories of people who’ve very active on Twitter, and they’ll go to a big event that’s related to their industry. People will say, “Oh, I’ve been waiting to meet you.” Or they already know a lot about you because of the digital medium they are seeing you on. This is the power of digital marketing, the power of social media.

However, you need to be consistent. You need to have a strategy. You need to pick a lane to focus on. Those would be the things that I would recommend to you so that you move away from failure and into taking action to build relationships – if that is the path you choose to go.
