Gift-wrap the buying experience
One of the reasons I like buying gifts for my parents online at Amazon.ca is because there is a gift-wrapping option. Not only can I get gifts to them more quickly and at a lower shipping price than I would if I buy at a store and mail them myself, the gifts are wrapped.
During the holiday season, shopping malls offer gift wrapping for a fee, yet it is not common in Canada to go into a store that provides gift wrapping as part of their service offering.
When I visited my daughter in Tarragona, Spain (just west of Barcelona), she went into a store called Ale Hop to buy a gift for a friend’s birthday. She asked for it to be gift wrapped. They took the purchase she had bought, put it into a silver foil pouch that displayed their logo, and sealed it. Ta da – the present was beautifully wrapped.
My daughter told me that it was common in Spain to ask retailers to do this. I experienced the same thing myself at a small independent gift shop in Tarragona. The owner hand-wrapped the item for me without me even asking. He heard me say it was a gift and, before I could blink, he had the paper and scissors out.
