Good Fortune

Chinese New Year is a large celebration that now encompasses a larger community in Vancouver, B.C., well beyond its traditional Chinese roots.

In response to this, more and more businesses are acknowledging this festive time of year. Vancity Credit Union is one of them. Their savvy marketing department, fuelled by community spirit, came up with a clever public campaign. I was at Vancity doing my business banking and noticed fortune cookies at each teller station, including a full bowl of cookies on a table in the branch.

Feeling inspired, I left the building cracking open one cookie to see what fortune was in store for me. I discovered Vancity had personalised the message in each cookie to educate members about Vancity’s services. I couldn’t help but chuckle and then proceeded to open the second cookie – which of course I had planned to pass on to a friend but was too intrigued now to share.

Here’s what each of the fortunes told me:

Confucius says – no money, no problem – get a Vancity RRSP loan

Confucius says – pay yourself first – invest in a Vancity RRSP

Can you tell it was RRSP season? It’s catchy ideas like this that make activities such as banking more fun. I am impressed with how Vancity is blending culture and the customer experience into one.

What are you doing this year to create an engaging customer service experience?
