Recycling Becomes Art
Over the past few years, cities in Metro Vancouver have started to offer recycling options on major city streets.
When I lived in Pitt Meadows until recently, I would attend the Saturday Farmer’s Market in Maple Ridge. While walking down the main retail street in town, I noticed a gorgeously painted recycling repository. It had three areas for recycling; food waste, cans and bottles, and paper. This was the first time I had seen a repository that included food waste.
What I love most about this is how the city incorporated something useful into art. Not only is it eye-catching, it is very inviting to use and really brightens up the street.
Many cities are working hard to design and present their main streets as enjoyable outdoor spaces that encourage tourists and locals to spend more time lingering. When this happens, it creates happier communities and a stronger local economy.
