Sign of the Times
Now that my daughter is 22 years old, I enjoy getting her perspective on what is important to her and her peers. As a marketing strategist, I find it helpful to be plugged into the trends that drive the younger generations.
A good friend of mine has a daughter who is nine years old. I spend a fair bit of time with her. This past Christmas, she received a card from one of her grandmothers that surprised me. I had never considered in 2012 that cards geared towards kids would have pictures of cartoon characters using laptops. In actuality, it makes sense because for them technology is so much a part of their day-to-day lives.
What I witnessed here was a greeting-card company recognizing that it was time to adapt to new and emerging market trends and demands. As business owners, keeping up with the times to attract new and emerging fans means being willing to shift to what resonates with those in our target demographic.
Last fall, I launched a virtual marketing program with this intention in mind. It was a great deal of work to set up. Now that it is up and running, I am very happy I committed to offering small- and micro-business owners a virtual learning program with marketing consultant support. So far, it has been a very successful program.
